What Happens to Staking Rewards If a Pool Retires or Shuts Down?
If a Cardano staking pool you have delegated to retires or shuts down, you stop earning new rewards from that pool immediately, but you do not lose any rewards you have already earned. The ADA staked in your wallet remains under your control and is never at risk. You can redelegate to another pool at any time, and your existing rewards (including those already paid out and any pending in the reward account) remain yours.
Immediate effects when a pool retires
When a pool operator decides to retire a pool, they submit a retirement certificate on-chain. This triggers a specific sequence:
- Current epoch continues normally - The pool still produces blocks and pays rewards for the epoch in which the retirement is announced.
- Pool becomes inactive - Starting in the next epoch, the pool no longer participates in block production. It stops earning rewards for its delegators.
- No new rewards accrue - Your delegation remains technically assigned to the retired pool until you change it, but because the pool produces no blocks, you earn nothing.
- Existing rewards are safe - Any rewards already distributed to your reward address (including those from the final epoch) are yours. Pending rewards from the current epoch are paid out at the end of that epoch as usual.
What about pool shutdown without formal retirement?
A pool can also disappear without a formal on-chain retirement - for example, if the operator stops running the nodes or loses the keys. In this case:
- The pool simply stops producing blocks. No blocks means no rewards.
- Your delegation remains assigned to a non-producing pool until you change it.
- The pool may eventually be deregistered automatically if it fails to produce blocks for a prolonged period (typically several months), but this is not guaranteed. The protocol does not force retirement.
- You may need to wait for the pool to be removed from wallet interfaces, but your ADA remains safe.
Your rewards are not at risk
Cardano staking is non-custodial. Your ADA never leaves your wallet. The staking mechanism works through delegation, not deposit. Key points:
- Rewards are paid to your reward address - This is a separate address derived from your stake key. Rewards accumulate there and can be withdrawn at any time.
- No slashing or loss of principal - There is no mechanism in Cardano that can reduce your staked balance. Pool performance issues or retirement only affect future rewards.
- Pending rewards are paid - Any rewards earned but not yet distributed (from the current epoch) are paid at the epoch boundary, even if the pool retires before that boundary.
What you need to do
You do not need to take any immediate action to protect your existing funds. However, to resume earning rewards:
- Check your wallet - Most wallet interfaces (Daedalus, Lace, Eternl) will show the pool as retired or inactive. Look for a "delegation" or "staking" section.
- Choose a new pool - Select an active pool. Consider factors like pool size, margin, and reliability. Avoid pools that are saturated (over 64 million ADA staked) as they earn reduced rewards.
- Redelegate - Submit a new delegation transaction to the new pool. There is no fee to redelegate beyond the standard transaction fee. Your existing delegation to the retired pool is automatically replaced.
- Wait one epoch - Your delegation takes effect at the start of the next full epoch. You will begin earning rewards from the new pool after that epoch ends.
How Long Can You Stay Delegated to a Retired Pool?
There is no time limit. Your delegation remains assigned to the retired pool indefinitely unless you change it. However, you earn nothing while delegated to a non-producing pool. The only practical consequence is lost opportunity - you could be earning rewards elsewhere.
Can a retired pool return?
Technically, yes. A pool operator can reactivate a retired pool by registering it again. But this is rare. In practice, if a pool retires, the operator has chosen to stop. You should treat it as permanent and redelegate.
Summary
- Rewards earned before retirement - Yours to keep.
- Rewards from the current epoch - Paid normally at epoch end.
- Future rewards - Stop immediately when the pool stops producing.
- Your ADA - Safe, never at risk.
- What to do - Redelegate to an active pool to resume earning.
The only thing lost when a pool retires is the opportunity to earn future rewards from that pool. Your existing rewards and principal are unaffected.
