Daedalus vs Lace vs Eternl: Which Cardano Wallet to Use
Choosing a Cardano wallet is not one-size-fits-all. Your hardware, your habits, and what you actually do with your ADA will steer you toward one of these three: Daedalus, Lace, or Eternl. Each makes different tradeoffs. The right one for you depends on which tradeoffs you can live with.
Setup time and resource usage
Daedalus downloads the full Cardano blockchain. That means the initial sync can take hours, sometimes more than a day on slow connections or older drives. Once synced, Daedalus consumes 5-10 GB of disk space and keeps using significant RAM and CPU. You are effectively running a full node. If you reclaim that space, you have to resync.
Lace and Eternl are light clients. They connect to remote servers and only download the data needed to show your balances and transactions. Setup takes minutes. Disk use is negligible. Memory use is low. Lace runs as a browser extension or desktop app. Eternl runs as a browser extension and also has a standalone desktop version. Neither requires you to host the blockchain.
What this means for you: If your laptop is old, your internet is metered, or you want to open a wallet on a coffee shop connection, Daedalus is almost certainly the wrong choice. Lace or Eternl will just work.
Staking Interface Quality
All three support staking. The differences are in how they present it.
Daedalus shows a staking center with pool saturation, roa (return on ADA), and pool metadata. It is thorough but slow. Navigating between pools takes noticeable time because the interface refreshes from the local node. The tradeoff is full transparency: you see exactly what the node sees.
Lace has a cleaner, faster staking interface. It is designed for delegation as a quick action, not a deep dive. Pool data loads quickly from remote sources. You can delegate in a few clicks. The downside: you see less raw chain data.
Eternl is the most feature-rich. It offers advanced staking options: pool delegation strategies, multi-pool delegation from one wallet, and detailed pool history. The interface is more complex than Lace. If you manage multiple wallets or want granular control, Eternl gives you tools Daedalus and Lace do not.
dApp Compatibility
All three connect to Cardano dApps. The integration depth varies.
Daedalus integrates dApp connectivity through its built-in browser. It works, but the experience is slow. You open the dApp inside Daedalus. This is fine for occasional use. For frequent swaps or gaming, the latency becomes annoying.
Lace was built with dApp connectivity as a core use case. It uses the same CIP-30 standard (the Cardano dApp connector API) that most dApps expect. Connections are fast. The wallet stays out of your way.
Eternl also supports CIP-30 and has one of the highest dApp compatibility rates. It handles many edge cases other wallets struggle with - unusual transaction types, multi-asset minting, and script interactions. Power users who hit those edge cases tend to prefer Eternl.
Hardware Wallet Support
All three support Ledger and Trezor devices. The experience differs.
Daedalus pairs with hardware wallets through a direct USB connection. It works reliably but can be finicky with driver issues, especially on Windows. Transactions are slower because the full node must verify each step.
Lace also supports hardware wallets. The setup is simpler than Daedalus, partly because the light client has less to sync. Device connection is handled by the browser extension framework.
Eternl has the most mature hardware wallet integration. It supports multiple devices simultaneously, handles complex transactions (like batched sends or minting) that sometimes fail in other wallets, and gives clear feedback when a device is disconnected or misconfigured. If hardware wallets are your primary security model, Eternl is the least likely to frustrate you.
The daedalus sync speed misconception
People sometimes think Daedalus sync time reflects Cardano transaction throughput. It does not. Daedalus syncs the entire history of every transaction ever made on Cardano. That history is determined by the chain length, not by current TPS. A high-TPS chain with a young history can sync faster than a low-TPS chain with a decade of data. Daedalus sync speed tells you something about your hardware, disk speed, and network connection. It tells you nothing about how fast Cardano processes new transactions.
Match your use case
Long-term holder: If you stake and rarely transact, Daedalus gives you full node trustlessness. But the weight of the full blockchain may not be worth the hours of sync when you return to check your balance. Lace or Eternl are lighter and serve the same purpose for most holders.
Daily DeFi user: You want fast, reliable dApp connectivity. Lace or Eternl. Daedalus will slow you down.
NFT trader: Speed matters. Lace loads quick. Eternl gives you batch operations and better handling of script transactions. Daedalus is too heavy.
Multi-wallet manager: Eternl. Its advanced features for handling multiple accounts and multiple stake pools are unmatched.
There is no universal best wallet. Each serves a different pattern. Pick the one that fits how you actually use Cardano.
